General Summary

The Department of English at Illinois State University, located in Normal, Illinois, seeks an Assistant Professor in TESOL and Applied Linguistics for a nine-month, tenure-track position.

We invite candidates with a primary specialization in second language pedagogy, multilingual education, second language literacy, critical language assessment, anti-racist TESOL and/or language policy. The teacher-scholar hired into this position is expected to have a program of research that centers multilingualism, translingual and functionalist approaches to language and literacy education.

The selected candidate will join an internationally recognized English Studies faculty; participate in delivering well-established undergraduate and graduate concentrations in TESOL and Linguistics; help to further our commitments to preparing students to create linguistically and culturally sustainable pedagogies; work with diverse language and literacy practices; promote attitude change and diversity in language variety and language use. This appointment will carry a 2/3 teaching load. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Teaching opportunities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses in Second Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, TESOL Practicum, and Critical Language Assessment. Depending on training and education, successful applicants may be asked to teach introductory courses in linguistics for majors and minors as well as for general education.

The ISU English Department emphasizes an English Studies model in its undergraduate, MA, and Ph.D. programs, and includes scholars in the fields of Children's Literature, Composition, Creative Writing, English Education, Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies, Publishing Studies, Rhetoric, TESOL, and Technical Communication. Required Qualifications

* Ph.D. degree in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Studies, or a related field, or foreign equivalent, by the start of the appointment.

* Evidence of TESOL and Applied linguistic scholarship centered in critical pedagogy and multilingualism; a coherent pattern of research and teaching rooted in social justice and equity commitments.

* A record of innovative college teaching in TESOL and related fields.

* Oral and written proficiency in the English language, as mandated by state law.

* Working knowledge and/or literacy in a second language.

We additionally welcome candidates with a clear program of research in second language pedagogy, language assessment, multiliteracies, and/or translingualism; training and experience with overseeing TESOL practica; and at least two years of teaching experience in the K-16 classroom, either in the US or abroad.
