Position Description

Copy Editor/Proofreader

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Copy Editor/Proofreader in the Health Forum and Marketing Division.

Purpose

Performs copyedit and proofreading function to prevent errors that impact the credibility and believability of AHA publications. Consults with Managing and Senior Editors on content and quality of articles; edits and corrects errors in logic, grammar, spelling, usage and style, rewriting to fix or align improper language and correct awkward transitions. Conforms all copy styles to both in-house and Associated Press guidelines, as well as to each publication's preferences, while maintaining the graphic style and brand of each publication. Serves as style expert and editorial sounding board as needed.

Essential Functions

  1. Copyedits H&HN, Trustee, HFM and H&HN Weekly: Works with editors and writers often rewriting wordy passages or smoothing awkward language. Suggests and/or writes better headlines or subheads as needed.
  2. Performs fact-checks and proofreads on Magazines, e-newsleter, surveys, sales, and marketing materials to prevent errors and guard against libel, querying editors as needed, and otherwise helps ensure the publications adhere to high journalistic and quality standards.
  3. Manages heavy copy flow from a variety of editors in a timely manner to meet tight deadlines tied to printer's contracted services. Works with senior staff to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
  4. Review sales and marketing materials for style, usage, grammar, spelling and consistency. While performing a line-by-line copy review of special projects as needed: e.g., roundtables, gatefolds, surveys, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Journalism, or English.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Journalism or publishing.
  • Must possess specialized knowledge of the English languagespecifically grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling.
  • Have a solid understanding of the editorial process for both print and online publishing
  • For both Mac and PC platforms, knowledge of the Quark Publishing System or other workflow management system software, QuarkXPress (preferred) or InDesign, Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel), Internet/Web and e-mail programs is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health care, business and legislative terminology is preferred
